PegIt Hints & Tips
The PegIt Guide...
If you prefer to figure the logic out yourself and you're looking for a
challenge then maybe you should put off reading this page for now. However,
if you've found yourself getting stuck on the 'intro levels' or just have
a general interest in the logic involved in the game, read on...
There are no actual solutions given on this page but level solutions will
be added to this site eventually. After reading through some of the
hints and tips you should find yourself tackling the levels in the game
with a little more than just trial and error.
The Dark and Light PegIts
Most of the levels in PegIt are played out on a Checkered style floor. Some
of the PegIts stand on Light colored tiles and other PegIts stand on Dark tiles.
Depending on the graphic style of the level it can be easy to spot but not all
levels follow the Dark/Light style. Now, a simple rule to learn which (once again)
seems so obvious: The PegIts standing on the light tiles (Light PegIts) can
only ever jump over PegIts standing on the dark tiles (Dark PegIts!)
and vice versa.
Also note: The Dark PegIts can not jump onto light tiles so a Dark PegIt
is always going to be a Dark PegIt and a Light PegIt will never stray to
the Dark Side!
Take a look at the level pictured on the right, taken from one of the
Difficult Level Packs! It's quite a complicated looking level but there's
something to look out for which may not be immediately obvious until you
understand this Dark/Light rule. See how there are only 4 PegIts standing
on dark tiles in the upper right of the board. All the others are Light
PegIts. Some of the Light PegIts can escape down the Holes but to remove
the rest of them you'll need to use the Dark PegIts. There's no other
way to do it! Also note that because the Dark PegIts can only ever
stand on dark tiles, they're restricted to that part of the board. The
Light PegIts therefore must come to them!
Exceptions to the Dark and Light rule... The only time a PegIt can
change between Dark and Light is by using a Teleport, Shifter or
Timeslip. Look out for levels where this kind of switch over is
required!
'Saving' and 'Wasting' Jumps...
The object of the game is to remove a number of PegIts with a number of Jumps.
The precise number of Jumps and PegIts gives a very important clue as to how
the level can be completed. One concept to understand is that of 'Wasting'
Jumps. A Wasted Jump is where a PegIt makes a jump but doesn't remove any
PegIts in the process. Sometimes Jumps must be wasted in order to travel
across the board.
Sometimes you can remove two or more PegIts in just
one jump (with Trampolines etc.) and this is known as 'Saving' jumps.
In this first example (see pictured left), you can see 6 PegIts and
you have 5 Jumps. if you subtract the 5 Jumps away from 6 PegIts
you're left with 1 which is just perfect to complete the level! A simple rule is, if
PegIts minus Jumps = 1 it's very likely the level is going to be straightforward (No 'Saving' or 'Wasting' required.)
In the second picture you see 4 PegIts and
you have 2 Jumps. If you use the 'PegIts minus Jumps'
calculation, you're left with 2 PegIts; That's 1 too many!
From this we know that in order to complete the level we'll have to make 1 'Saving'.
It seems so obvious in this example but the same rule works on much bigger levels.
If we had 30 PegIts and 25 Jumps we'd have to
make 4 Savings because 30 minus 25 is 5, which is 4 too many.
In the pictured example we can make a Saving using the Bomb. 1st PegIt jumps onto the
Bomb. The 2nd PegIt jumps onto the Button which would remove 2 PegIts with 1 jump. That's a Saving!
In the next example you see 12 PegIts and you have
17 Jumps. If you use the 'PegIts minus Jumps'
calculation, you're left with -5 PegIts! That's far too many jumps!
You can probably work out that's 6 jumps more than you'd usually need.
This is a big clue (and also a guide) to the fact that, in order to complete this level, you
will have to 'Waste' 6 jumps. There is probably no way to avoid it.
The best way to tackle this level would be to work out where (and when) those Wasted jumps
must be made and to avoid Wasting more than 6!
From these examples you can see how the number of PegIts and Jumps can give you
some clues as to how the level must be completed. If you know exactly how many jumps
can be wasted or how many jumps need to be saved it can narrow down the possibilities
quite a bit. Of course, sometimes it's not so straightforward. For example, some
levels may require a mix of "Wasting one jump here and Saving one jump there."
That's when things get a bit more difficult!
